Ikkis Release Delayed: Maddock Films Dodges Dhurandhar and Avatar Clashes for Solo January Debut
Maddock Films has strategically postponed the release of its biographical war drama Ikkis from December 25, 2025, to January 1, 2026, ensuring a solo theatrical window amid intense competition. This move avoids the ongoing box office dominance of Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, which continues to perform strongly with no signs of slowdown. Additionally, the global release of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 19, 2025, is expected to command significant screens during the Christmas week, limiting showcasing opportunities for new entries.
Producer Dinesh Vijan, known for smart scheduling, has employed this tactic before with notable success. In 2017, Hindi Medium was shifted to avoid clashing with Baahubali 2, allowing it an uncluttered run and strong earnings. Similarly, in 2024, Chhaava moved dates to dodge Pushpa 2, benefiting from a clear path to profitability. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh praised the decision on X, noting it as Vijan’s third such win and emphasizing that the shift guarantees prime screens and better visibility for Ikkis in the new year.
Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sriram Raghavan (Andhadhun), Ikkis marks his first war film and is based on the true story of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient, who displayed extraordinary valor during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The film stars Agastya Nanda (grandson of Amitabh Bachchan) in the lead role, making his theatrical debut after Netflix’s The Archies. It also features the late Dharmendra in what is described as his final on-screen appearance, alongside Jaideep Ahlawat, Simar Bhatia, and Deepak Dobriyal.

The postponement also sidesteps a direct clash with Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday’s romantic comedy Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, now set for a solo Christmas release on December 25, 2025. Industry reactions have been largely positive, with social media buzzing about the “wise” and “calculated” strategy. One X user highlighted potential risks for upcoming films like Border 2 (January 23, 2026), suggesting Ikkis could impact screen allocation in early January. Others praised the move for prioritizing content-driven cinema, with comments like “Avoiding the inevitable” and “Masterclass in release planning.”
Building anticipation, the final trailer will drop on December 19, 2025, coinciding with Avatar‘s release to leverage theater footfall. Maddock Films shared on Instagram: “This new year, gift yourself courage,” teasing an emotional narrative of heroism and sacrifice. With a budget estimated at ₹125 crore and international distribution by Yash Raj Films, Ikkis is positioned for maximum impact in 2026. As trade experts predict, this could complete Vijan’s “hat-trick” of successful reschedules, setting the stage for a strong opening amid holiday momentum.
