About The Film
Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood follows San and Mayu, two students at an all girls school on a peaceful island.
When war reaches their home, they are ordered to help nurse wounded soldiers in a military hospital hidden in a cave.
As the conflict intensifies around them, the friends try to hold on to moments of comfort and connection amid growing hardship and loss.
The story is inspired by the real life experiences of the Himeyuri Corps during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.
Yukimitsu Ina makes his feature directorial debut with the film, which is also the first feature from animation studio Sasayuri, founded by former Studio Ghibli animator Hitomi Tateno.
The screenplay was co-written by Ina and Taku Kishimoto. Music is by Kensuke Ushio.
