‘Haq’ Poised for Tax-Free Status in Bihar After Elections? Film Surges Past ₹10 Crore in Opening Weekend

New Delhi, November 10, 2025 – As the final phase of the Bihar Assembly elections wraps up tomorrow, speculation is rife that the courtroom drama Haq, starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, could be declared tax-free in the state. The film, which tackles women’s rights and draws inspiration from the landmark Shah Bano case, has already sparked widespread discussion and public demands for tax exemptions due to its social relevance.

Directed by Suparn S Varma and produced by Junglee Pictures, Haq has not only raised eyebrows with its bold narrative on triple talaq and justice but is also being hailed as a potential pathbreaking film in Bollywood’s socio-political genre. Released on November 7, the movie collected over ₹10 crore in its first weekend, with steady growth across days: ₹1.75 crore on day one, ₹3.35 crore on day two, and ₹3.75 crore on day three, pushing it close to the ₹9 crore mark before optimistic estimates suggest it has crossed the threshold. Industry insiders expect the momentum to continue through the weekdays, buoyed by positive word-of-mouth.

Yami Gautam, portraying a resilient woman fighting for her rights, and Emraan Hashmi as her husband-turned-adversary, have delivered what critics call “phenomenal” and “career-best” performances. Many predict award nominations for the duo across major ceremonies, praising their nuanced portrayals in this gripping tale of resilience and patriarchy.

While the film has faced controversy, including a legal notice from Shah Bano’s daughter over its depiction of the case, its release timing amid Bihar’s elections—phased on November 6 and 11—has amplified calls for tax-free status, similar to past films like Manjhi: The Mountain Man that received exemptions in the state for their inspirational themes. If granted, it could boost Haq‘s accessibility and box office run in Bihar.

As votes are cast tomorrow, all eyes are on whether Haq will join the ranks of tax-exempt films, cementing its status as a timely cinematic milestone.
