About the Film
Crossing revisits a pivotal chapter from the Long March of the Chinese Red Army in 1934-1935. After heavy losses in the Battle of Xiang River, the army found itself cornered by a much larger enemy force numbering around 400,000 troops.
The leadership then chose a series of bold river crossings at Chishui to break the encirclement and regain the initiative through quick movement and surprise.
The story does not stay only with strategy and battles. It also follows quieter personal threads. An older soldier carries a sacred personal vow while a homeless orphan struggles to stay alive amid the fighting.
Their unlikely bond gives the larger military events a human face and shows how ordinary people endure extraordinary times. Xu Zhanxiong directed the film, which was made to mark the 90th anniversary of the Long March.
Liu Ye plays a central role as Mao Zedong, with Wang Lei appearing as Zhou Enlai. The supporting cast includes Yu Shi, Wang Zhifei and several other actors who fill out the ranks and leadership.
The movie runs 122 minutes and is shot in Mandarin. It mixes large-scale action with dramatic scenes that focus on sacrifice, unity and resilience under pressure.
