Uyir Movie 2026Uyir Movie 2026

Uyir is a Malayalam investigative crime thriller directed by M. Padmakumar. The film stars Roshan Mathew in the lead role as a sub-inspector, alongside Baiju Santhosh, Vineeth Thattil David, Divya M. Nair, Athulya Chandra and others. The story revolves around a police investigation, drawing inspiration from real life incidents.

The film opened to a very quiet response at the box office. Being a serious investigative thriller without major star power or aggressive pre-release hype, it received limited screen allocation and failed to create any significant buzz among audiences. The opening day collections were extremely low, and the film has continued to struggle even after four days.

While the subject matter has some potential for a niche audience that enjoys police procedurals, it has not managed to attract the wider family or multiplex audience. Positive word-of-mouth has been almost non-existent in the initial days.

Our Review

Uyir is a realistic crime investigation thriller that attempts to portray the life of a young sub-inspector during his probation period in a sensitive area of Kerala. Directed by M. Padmakumar, who has previously handled intense and grounded stories, the film focuses more on the everyday struggles, moral dilemmas, and pressures faced by police personnel rather than relying on high-octane action or commercial formulas.

Roshan Mathew plays the central character SI Ajeeb, and early indications suggest he has delivered a sincere and restrained performance that suits the realistic tone of the film. The supporting cast, including Baiju Santhosh and Shruthy Menon, add weight to the narrative. The film’s biggest strength lies in its attempt to stay rooted and authentic. By drawing from real incidents, it tries to highlight the challenges of policing in border regions and the personal toll it takes on officers.

The screenplay focuses on investigation procedures, human emotions, and the grey areas of law enforcement instead of sensationalising the subject. However, this very realistic approach seems to have worked against it at the box office on the opening day. In the current market, even well made content driven films struggle if they fail to generate sufficient pre-release excitement or strong early word-of-mouth.

At the box office, Uyir has opened to a very quiet response. Advance bookings were limited, and theatre occupancy on Day 1 is reported to be quite low across most centres in Kerala. Unlike big-star-driven Malayalam films or those with massive pre-release hype, this film is completely dependent on positive reviews and audience recommendations to survive. If the content is genuinely engaging and word-of-mouth spreads positively over the next two days, it may see some improvement during the weekend.

However, if the early feedback remains average or mixed, the film will find it very difficult to sustain in theatres. Compared to other recent Malayalam crime thrillers that managed to create buzz through strong storytelling or powerful performances, Uyir appears to be missing that crucial connect with the audience right now.

The lack of aggressive promotion and the realistic, non-commercial tone might be limiting its immediate appeal among regular moviegoers. For the film to have any chance of a decent run, it will need excellent reviews and strong audience appreciation, especially in Kerala. As of now, Uyir is off to a very slow start and will require a significant turnaround in the coming days to avoid an early exit from theatres.
