Balan: The Boy arrived in theatres today with quiet anticipation. Directed by Chidambaram after the success of Manjummel Boys and written by Jithu Madhavan, the film stars young Adhisheshan K R as the titular character and Farzana Palathingal as his mother.
Early reactions from audiences on X and other platforms show appreciation for its emotional core, though opinions are not entirely uniform. The story follows a teenage boy searching for his missing mother after a childhood marked by instability and hidden truths.
It explores their fragile bond, the weight of secrets, and a journey toward closure and understanding. The narrative blends elements of mystery and survival drama without relying on conventional thrills. Viewers have largely praised the lead performances.
Farzana delivers a layered portrayal of a fiercely protective yet wounded mother, while Adhisheshan brings natural vulnerability and strength to the young Balan. Many have highlighted the cinematography and Sushin Shyam’s background score for creating a haunting, melancholic atmosphere that enhances key emotional moments.
The interval sequence and underlying suspense have also received positive mentions. On the other side, some audience members noted that the second half feels slower and lengthier, with the heavy themes of trauma and survival making parts of the film intense or uneven in pacing.
This is a film best suited for those who appreciate character-driven stories about family, identity, and resilience. Its strengths lie in authentic acting, thoughtful direction, and strong technical craft that rewards patient viewing.
The main weakness is its deliberate tempo and disturbing undertones, which may not appeal to everyone seeking lighter or faster entertainment. It works well on the big screen for those who want to fully experience its visual and emotional texture.
Final Verdict: Balan: The Boy is a sincere and often moving drama that stands out for its performances and emotional honesty. While it carries some pacing challenges and intense themes that may divide viewers, it offers a worthwhile theatrical experience for fans of grounded, heartfelt storytelling.
