The Death of Robin Hood arrives in US theaters today as a dark, stripped-down reimagining of the famous outlaw. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind the quiet drama Pig, this A24 release casts Hugh Jackman as an older, battle-scarred Robin Hood who is forced to face the violent life he has lived.
The story centers on a gravely injured Robin who ends up in the care of a mysterious woman. What follows is less about heroic archery or daring escapes and more about quiet reckoning, regret, and the heavy cost of a lifetime spent stealing and killing.
It is a slow, atmospheric piece shot in the rugged landscapes of Northern Ireland. Early audience reactions online have been noticeably mixed. Many people are highlighting Hugh Jackman’s intense, committed performance, saying he disappears into the role of a haunted and brutal man.
The film’s gritty visuals, strong sense of place, and unflinching look at violence have also earned praise from viewers who appreciate its serious tone and craftsmanship. At the same time, a large number of reactions point to pacing issues.
Several viewers feel the second half drags and becomes too somber, losing momentum after a more intense opening section. Others have noted that the lack of traditional Robin Hood energy, adventure, or any lighter moments makes the film feel cold or overly heavy for what many expect from the character.
This version will likely appeal most to fans of slow-burn, character-driven dramas who enjoy deconstructed myths and dark, introspective stories. It has clear strengths in its lead performance and moody atmosphere, but the deliberate pace and bleak outlook are genuine weaknesses for anyone hoping for excitement or broader entertainment.
Final Verdict: The Death of Robin Hood is a bold, uneven attempt to humanize a legend by focusing on its darkest corners. Jackman carries the film with a raw performance, yet its slow rhythm and heavy tone limit its appeal. It is worth a theater visit only if you are drawn to thoughtful, grim character studies; most viewers will probably be fine waiting for streaming.
