Our Review

Savage House delivers a wickedly funny and unsettling portrait of social ambition gone horribly wrong in Georgian England. Claire Foy and Richard E. Grant are perfectly matched as a couple of increasingly desperate and grotesque social climbers who will stop at nothing to pull off the dinner party of the season, even as a pox outbreak and political chaos swirl outside their doors.

Director Peter Glanz (making his second feature) leans into the nastiness with surgical precision, turning the dinner table into a battlefield of class anxiety, petty humiliations, and moral decay. The humor is dark, dry, and often painfully funny, with the film finding real poignancy in how small the stakes feel to the outside world while they consume the characters entirely.

The period detail is rich and claustrophobic, and the supporting cast adds layers of comic menace and absurdity. It’s a film that wears its influences (particularly The Favourite) on its sleeve but carves out its own viciously entertaining identity. Early reviews have praised the lead performances and Glanz’s confident, mean-spirited direction, noting the film’s uncompromising commitment to its caustic tone even when it makes the characters deeply unlikable.

At the box office, Savage House has opened modestly in limited release, which is typical for this kind of sharp, adult-oriented black comedy that relies more on critical buzz and word-of-mouth than broad marketing. The early numbers reflect its selective rollout rather than lack of interest, and with strong notices for Foy and Grant’s work, it has clear potential to build a dedicated audience over time.

Compared to other recent period satires or dark comedies, it stands out for its gleeful nastiness and refusal to soften its edges. Looking ahead, Savage House feels destined for a healthy afterlife on streaming and home video, where its quotable cruelty and stellar cast can find the cult following it deserves. For fans of biting class satire and fearless performances, this is a sharp, memorable watch that rewards those willing to embrace its rotten heart.

It may not conquer the multiplexes, but it has already carved out a distinctive place in the conversation around smart, adult-oriented cinema in 2026.
