Directed by Travis Knight, the film aims to bring a more grounded yet epic take on the Eternia saga, focusing on themes of power, destiny, and heroism. The movie opened wide on the same day as Scary Movie 6 but is tracking significantly behind it. With a reported production budget between $170–200 million (before marketing), expectations were for a stronger opening in the $35–45 million range.

However, early numbers have come in softer than hoped, reflecting a challenging theatrical environment for original fantasy tentpoles without major franchise momentum in recent years. Family audiences have shown some interest, but overall turnout has been muted compared to the scale of the production.

What is the budget of Masters of the Universe

The production budget of Masters of the Universe is estimated between $170–200 million.

Our Review

Masters of the Universe attempts to reintroduce He-Man to modern audiences with a mix of epic scope, self-aware humor, and emotional grounding. Nicholas Galitzine brings charm and physical presence to the role of Prince Adam/He-Man, while Jared Leto’s Skeletor provides a suitably theatrical and menacing villain. The film leans into the colorful, over-the-top mythology of Eternia while trying to add emotional weight through themes of legacy, friendship, and responsibility.

Visually, it delivers on the spectacle expected from a big-budget fantasy, with impressive creature designs and action sequences. However, it struggles to fully capture the simple, joyful escapism of the original cartoon and toys, sometimes feeling caught between nostalgic reverence and a desire to feel more “serious.” Early audience scores have been decent (B CinemaScore), particularly among families and younger viewers, though critics have been mixed.

At the box office, the film has opened softer than hoped with a projected $30–31 million weekend. For a movie with this level of budget and brand recognition, this is a concerning start that puts significant pressure on its long-term theatrical performance and international numbers. While it has some built-in nostalgia and strong elements for kids, it is facing stiff competition and appears to be struggling to convert general audience interest into ticket sales.

Compared to other recent toy-based or fantasy reboots, it is landing in a similar “underwhelming opening” territory as some previous attempts. Looking ahead, Masters of the Universe will need strong word-of-mouth and international performance to have any chance of breaking even, and its ultimate success may depend more on streaming performance on Amazon Prime Video than its theatrical run.

For fans of the original He-Man, there are enough fun moments and respectful nods to make it an enjoyable watch, but it has yet to prove it can win over a broad mainstream audience.
