Alpha hit theatres today as the latest entry in the YRF Spy Universe. This time the spotlight is on two women carrying the action load — Alia Bhatt and Sharvari — with Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol in supporting roles and Hrithik Roshan making a brief appearance.

Directed by Shiv Rawail in his feature debut, the film runs a little over two hours and promises the usual high-stakes espionage mixed with hand-to-hand combat and twists.

Early reactions from people who caught the first shows are mixed, but there’s clear appreciation for what the two leads bring to the table. The story keeps things straightforward.

An assassin finds herself up against powerful forces tied to her past and ends up crossing paths with another skilled operative. They’re pushed into an uneasy alliance while dealing with a ruthless enemy.

It’s the classic spy-thriller setup — personal stakes, larger conspiracies, betrayals, and plenty of action — without overcomplicating the basics in the first half.

From what audiences are posting on X and sharing after early screenings, Alia Bhatt’s intense, stylish avatar is getting the loudest cheers. Her entry and the action sequences she leads have impressed quite a few viewers, who say she carries the film with real screen presence.

Sharvari holds her own well and brings solid energy to her character. The slick action choreography, tight editing in places, and effective background score are also being praised. Some people are calling the first half engaging and saying it keeps you hooked with its twists and pace.

On the other side, a section of viewers feels the film slows down after the interval. A few scenes and conversations stretch a bit longer than needed, and the pacing isn’t consistent throughout. Some have also pointed out that certain supporting elements don’t hit with the same impact.

Overall sentiment right now is that it’s a decent, stylish entertainer if you’re in the mood for popcorn action, but it doesn’t fully land as a tight, edge-of-the-seat thriller for everyone. If you enjoy the YRF Spy Universe films and want to see a female-led action spectacle on the big screen, Alpha is worth a theatre visit.

The lead performances and set pieces are its biggest strengths. However, if uneven pacing bothers you, waiting for OTT might be the smarter call so you can enjoy it without the drags feeling more noticeable.
