Our Review of Upekshita
Upekshita hits you right in the feels from the get-go, showing a regular woman’s life turning upside down after a fake promise of marriage leaves her pregnant and alone. Soma Chakraborty plays the lead with such raw pain and quiet fire that you can’t look away, like she’s living it for real. The story moves through Kolkata’s everyday spots, mixing courtroom drama with family heartbreaks, and it feels so close to what many folks go through without the big flashy stuff.
Jayanta Kumar Mondal directs it simply, no extra masala, just straight-up emotions and some hard truths about how society treats women. The newcomers Riya and Arghya bring fresh vibes, and little Osmita Saha steals scenes as the kid caught in the mess. Music stays low-key, fitting the sad tone without overdoing it, and the writing by Anustup Kundu keeps things tight, not dragging even in the heavy parts.
All in all, it’s a solid drama for those who like films that make you think and maybe tear up a bit. Not for the action crowd, but if you’re into Bengali stories about real struggles, this one’s worth the ticket. Could pick up steam through word of mouth in small halls.
What Worked
- Soma Chakraborty’s strong acting as the overlooked woman full of heart and no drama.
- Real life inspired plot that tackles tough topics like betrayal and women’s rights without preaching.
- Simple direction that keeps focus on emotions and everyday Bengal life.
What Didn’t Work
- Some side stories feel rushed, like they needed more time to build.
- Pacing gets slow in court scenes, might bore some viewers.
- Ending wraps up a little too neatly for such a heavy theme.
Facts and Behind the Scenes
Most people don’t know that Upekshita started shooting way back in 2023, but got delayed due to some production hiccups and maybe the pandemic aftermath, finally hitting screens in 2025. The team kept it low-budget by filming in actual Kolkata homes and streets, no fancy sets, which gives it that gritty, real feel. Jayanta Kumar Mondal, who directs, produces, and acts, pulled double duty to save costs, and he based parts of the script on stories he heard from friends in legal circles about similar cases.
Another exciting bit is that newcomers Arghya and Riya were picked after open auditions in Kolkata colleges, and they trained for months on emotional scenes with Soma Chakraborty mentoring them on set. The child artist Osmita Saha was a last-minute find from a local school play, and her natural acting surprised everyone one scene with her took just one take! The press meet at Iconic Event Planner showed the team’s passion, with talks about how the film aims to spark chats on women’s issues in Bengal society.
