Our Review of Good Fortune
Good Fortune is a fun supernatural comedy where Aziz Ansari directs and stars as gig worker Michael, whose life flips with rich guy Jeff (Seth Rogen) due to clumsy angel Gabriel (Keanu Reeves). Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh round out the cast with sharp bits. First half dives into funny class swaps and angel mishaps Reeves nails the goofy divine role with charm and laughs. Second half explores empathy and fixes, but some parts feel rushed. It’s witty on inequality without heavy preach, like a modern Trading Places meets It’s a Wonderful Life
What Worked
- Star power and chemistry Keanu, Seth, and Aziz bounce off each other hilariously.
- Fresh take on body swap trope with real world LA issues mixed in.
- Quick wit and visual gags that keep the laughs coming steady.
What Didn’t Work
- Some jokes might feel a tad predictable in the swap setup.
- Could dig deeper into the social bits without losing the fun.
- Short runtime leaves you wanting more from side characters.
Facts and Behind the Scenes
Good Fortune got rolling after Aziz Ansari’s last project hit a snag, and he teamed up with pals like Seth Rogen to make this comedy with heart. They shot in LA spots like Griffith Observatory, but the 2023 writers’ strike paused things right after starting in May. Filming picked back up in January 2024, and Keanu Reeves cracked his kneecap tripping in his trailer he powered through most scenes on crutches, sparking a viral #GetWellSoonKeanu wave online.
Not everyone knows Aziz dove deep into research, shadowing delivery guys and working hardware gigs to nail the gig economy vibe. The angel idea draws from classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, but with a modern twist. Carter Burwell’s score adds that whimsical touch, and despite the injury delay, they wrapped pick ups like a salsa dance scene once Keanu healed the team’s tight-knit feel shines through in the film’s easy charm.
