Our Review of Theatre: The Myth of Reality
Theatre: The Myth of Reality is a intriguing Malayalam mystery that blurs the lines between stage performance and real life, following a theatre troupe unraveling dark secrets during rehearsals for a play about forgotten myths.
Rima Kallingal shines as the intense director grappling with her past, delivering a layered performance full of quiet fire, while Sarasa Balussery brings warmth and depth as the veteran actress hiding family burdens.
Directed by Sajin Baabu, the film uses clever meta elements and shadowy visuals to build suspense, making you question what’s scripted and what’s not. The rustic theatre sets and haunting folk score add to the eerie vibe, touching on themes of identity and buried truths in a subtle way. But it moves a tad slow for some, with the abstract bits feeling confusing if you’re not into slow burn indies.
What Worked
- Rima Kallingal’s strong acting brings real depth to the cursed woman’s struggle.
- The mix of myth and modern life feels fresh and rooted in Kerala culture.
- Beautiful shots and music make the mystery pop without overdoing it.
What Didn’t Work
- The slow pace might drag for folks wanting quicker twists.
- Some side stories could tie up tighter.
- No big scares if you’re expecting a full thriller.
Facts and Behind the Scenes
Theatre: The Myth of Reality got its trailer launched at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film, where it wowed folks with its take on Kerala’s vanishing customs. Sajin Baabu wrote and directed it, drawing from real superstitions he grew up hearing, and the team shot in actual villages to keep that authentic eerie feel. Not many know Rima Kallingal won Best Actor at the Kerala Film Critics Awards for her role, beating big names, and the film explores how myths control women’s lives in ways most films skip.
Another exciting bit is it screened at festivals like Yalta and Kazan before theatres, getting picks for its bold questions on tradition. Most people aren’t aware the producers Anjana Talkies kept the budget smart by using local crew, focusing on story over stars. Shooting had tough rainy days in Kerala, but that added real mist to the mystical scenes, making the crew bond like family over chai breaks.
