Index
The story revolves around a young woman trapped at home during a national lockdown, confronting a traumatic incident and personal crises that test her resilience and survival instincts. As of 31 January 2026, the film has completed its opening day, with early estimates indicating a moderate start primarily in Tamil Nadu and select centres in Kerala and Karnataka.
Advance bookings were modest, and Day 1 figures reflect a restrained launch for a woman-centric thriller, grossing approximately ₹0.75 crore in India. Worldwide performance is similarly preliminary, with limited contributions from overseas markets like Malaysia and Singapore. The film’s prospects will depend on word-of-mouth growth over the weekend.

Our Review
Lockdown delivers a gripping narrative on isolation and trauma, viewed through the perspective of a single protagonist confined during a national crisis, addressing themes of endurance, fear, and self-reliance. Anupama Parameswaran offers a nuanced portrayal of Anita, shouldering the film’s emotional burden with subtlety and strength, bolstered by experienced actors like Revathi and Charle in crucial roles.
Debut director A.R. Jeeva chooses a restrained storyline, fostering suspense through psychological nuance and lifelike depictions rather than dramatic excess, although some early critiques highlight inconsistencies in writing and character progression that occasionally undermine the effect. With its theatrical debut on 30 January 2026, preliminary critiques and viewer reactions are surfacing, acknowledging the film’s delicate treatment of inspired real events and Anupama’s compelling central performance, yet identifying a deficient script and underdeveloped narratives as limitations.
Relative to recent Tamil female-led thrillers featuring prominent actors in survival stories, Lockdown corresponds more to modest achievements dependent on acting prowess rather than extensive commercial features. The ₹4 crore budget sets a favourable breakeven at approximately ₹8-10 crore gross, rendering it sturdy against a moderate debut if urban and female viewer support maintains engagement.
Subsequent performance will hinge on evening attendance, weekend sustainability, and natural promotion amid rivalry from other local films. Favourable comments on the lead’s arc could foster consistent growth, akin to content-focused dramas that surmount gradual beginnings via relatability.
Nonetheless, varied critical feedback might restrict widespread attraction, potentially limiting it to a standard grosser. In summary, Lockdown provides a contemplative, acting-focused thriller that tackles relevant concerns, with its financial feasibility depending on continued cinematic involvement in the forthcoming days.
