In a stunning turnaround for Tamil cinema, the film #ThalaivarThambiThalaimaiyil, starring Jiiva, has defied expectations to become Kollywood’s first blockbuster of 2026. Released during the Pongal festival with limited screens and minimal promotional hype, the movie has been propelled to success purely by audience enthusiasm, turning it into a celebratory festival winner.
Despite facing stiff competition from other Pongal releases, #ThalaivarThambiThalaimaiyil has recorded the highest ticket sales on BookMyShow, with over 138,000 tickets sold in the last 24 hours alone. This figure surpasses all rivals, underscoring the film’s organic appeal. Theater owners have responded swiftly: extra shows have been added, screen counts increased, and starting tomorrow, the film will shift to prime main screens across multiplexes and single theaters in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Ticket booking trends on BookMyShow paint a picture of explosive growth. On January 14, sales started modestly at 6,600 tickets. By January 15, they surged to 57,400, followed by 119,400 on January 16, and peaking at 138,420 on January 17. As of now, the cumulative bookings stand at approximately 322,000 tickets, signaling sustained momentum.
Industry insiders attribute this triumph to the film’s strong content, which resonates deeply with viewers. “Against all odds, this is a genuine blockbuster driven by word-of-mouth,” said a Chennai-based distributor. The movie’s narrative, blending family drama with action elements, has struck a chord, especially among younger audiences and families celebrating Pongal.
Jiiva, known for his versatile roles, leads the cast in what fans are calling a career-defining performance. The actor’s official X handle (@JiivaOfficial) has been flooded with praise, with netizens hailing the film as a “festival winner.” Directed by a rising filmmaker, the project was initially seen as an underdog due to its low-key launch amid bigger star vehicles.
This success story highlights a shift in Kollywood, where quality content can overpower marketing muscle. As screens expand, analysts predict the film could cross 500,000 tickets by week’s end, potentially setting new benchmarks for mid-budget releases.
With Pongal festivities winding down, #ThalaivarThambiThalaimaiyil stands as a testament to audience power. In an era of hype-driven cinema, this film’s rise proves that authentic storytelling still reigns supreme. Fans are already demanding sequels, but for now, it’s basking in its well-earned spotlight.
