Our Review
Habeebi is a sincere period romantic drama that explores love, community divides and the emotional impact of migration through the story of a young couple in a southern Tamil Nadu Muslim neighbourhood. Spanning multiple timelines, the film attempts to balance romance with social themes in a culturally rooted setting. Early reactions have praised the heartfelt performances, especially from leads Esha M and Malavika Manoj, and veteran Kasthuri Raja’s emotional portrayal.
The music by Sam C.S. and the film’s authentic depiction of community life have also received appreciation from critics who watched it early. While it may not appeal to mass audiences seeking high entertainment value, it has the potential to connect with viewers who appreciate emotional family dramas and culturally specific storytelling. At the box office, Habeebi has opened very poorly on its first day. Advance bookings were extremely weak, with very low ticket sales reported even late on the eve of release.
Theatre occupancy remained poor across most centres in Tamil Nadu, with many shows running at single-digit or low double-digit percentages. Social media updates from exhibitors and audiences showed limited excitement, and the film struggled to stand out among the multiple releases on the same day. Despite positive reviews, the lack of strong pre-release marketing and mass appeal elements has resulted in a very quiet start.
The film will need exceptional word-of-mouth from positive reviews to see any improvement over the weekend. Given the current trends, its theatrical prospects look challenging unless it manages to build significantly through organic recommendations in the coming days. For a content-driven romantic drama, this kind of opening is disappointing and suggests a very short theatrical run unless it finds unexpected traction through reviews.
