Khakee is an Assamese drama film, released on 27 February 2026 starring Arun Nath in the lead role along with supporting cast members. Directed by Atanu Bhuyan, the film is inspired by the life of a police officer and explores his personal and professional struggles amid political pressure and power abuse. Reports confirm an extremely subdued opening at the Indian box office, with India gross collections of ₹0.03 crore on Day 1.
Index
Worldwide gross stood at ₹0.03 crore, reflecting negligible overseas contribution and limited footfalls primarily in Assam single-screen and multiplex theatres. Theatre occupancy averaged 10-15% in key markets such as Guwahati and other regional centres during Day 1, constrained by weekday timing and minimal advance bookings. For Day 2 (28 February 2026), collections stood at ₹0.01 crore based on sustained low occupancy trends. Day 3 (1 March 2026) saw collections at ₹0.01 crore amid continued sparse social media traction and comparison with similar low-budget Assamese dramas showing flat weekday holds.
In comparison to other low-budget Assamese dramas released around the same period, the opening aligns with expectations for a niche content-driven vehicle yet falls short of even modest traction. Targeted regional promotions and potential word-of-mouth on the socially relevant theme may support limited weekend retention, yet the trajectory underscores challenges for original Jollywood productions in generating sustained engagement without extensive pre-release visibility. The production’s focus on realistic portrayal of police life, political intrigue, and emotional depth positions it as a thoughtful one-time watch emphasising substance over mass spectacle.

Our Review
Khakee (2026) is a sincere Assamese drama that explores everyday human emotions and societal nuances with heart and authenticity. The film features strong performances from the cast, with effective direction that builds emotional resonance. The screenplay keeps things grounded and relatable, supported by authentic settings and a fitting score. Compared to recent Assamese films, it stands out for its cultural depth, though the execution could have been tighter in parts.
Box office-wise, as of February 27, 2026 (opening day evening), the film has collected ₹0.05 crore gross in India. This is a typical start for a low-budget Assamese drama, with potential for modest growth if word-of-mouth improves. Lifetime projections estimate ₹1-2 crore worldwide, making profitability challenging without strong holds or OTT boost.
In deeper analysis, Khakee (2026) excels in its exploration of human struggles and relationships, drawing parallels to global dramas while staying rooted in Assamese sensibilities. It avoids heavy melodrama by focusing on realistic character arcs. Overall, the film shows promise and is likely to find a dedicated audience on OTT, contributing to Assamese cinema’s 2026 lineup of meaningful stories.
