Our Review of The Toxic Avenger
The Toxic Avenger brings back that crazy cult energy with Peter Dinklage as the janitor who gets dumped in toxic waste and turns into a mutant crime fighter taking down bad guys in bloody, funny ways. It’s got heart under the gore, like the original Troma stuff, with laughs from the over the top villains and action. But it feels a bit like it’s trying too hard at times, and without big hype, it might not hook everyone. If you’re into wild horror-comedies, it’s a fun mess, though not groundbreaking.
What Worked
- Peter Dinklage owns the role, mixing humor and pathos as the deformed hero.
- The gory fights and practical effects keep the cult charm alive.
- Kevin Bacon as the sleazy villain adds some cheeky fun.
What Didn’t Work
- The story gets predictable, echoing the old film too closely without fresh spins.
- Low key promotion led to weak buzz and small crowds.
- Some bits feel dragged out, and the gross outs might turn off casual viewers.
