Hell Trotter, also known as Heo Năm Móng, arrived in limited US theaters on June 19, 2026. This Vietnamese horror film directed by Lưu Thành Luân draws from local folklore about a mysterious five-clawed pig spirit. It mixes supernatural elements with a contemporary story about a content creator chasing a legend.
The film follows a viral YouTuber who travels to a sacred shrine to investigate the old myth. What starts as a curiosity-driven trip quickly turns into something far more unsettling, pulling in an ethereal girl and forces tied to past wrongs and consequences.
The cast, led by Võ Tấn Phát and featuring Trần Ngọc Vàng, Oc Thanh Van, Nhat Y, and Thanh Thủy, brings these eerie events to life over a 103-minute runtime. Early audience reactions across social media and review platforms have been mixed.
Several viewers appreciated the modern take on Vietnamese folklore and the committed, genuinely frightening performance by Trần Ngọc Vàng, with some noting effective tension and gore in key moments. A few felt it showed progress in the local horror style and offered a fun, trope-filled ride with decent setup and atmosphere.
At the same time, common complaints include uneven pacing that drags in places and an overuse of jump scares that quickly become tiresome rather than scary. Some viewers found the story disjointed, especially later on, and felt it didn’t fully deliver on its promising premise or themes.
A number described it as watchable but ultimately forgettable. Fans of folk horror and Asian supernatural cinema may find enough cultural flavor and intense moments to enjoy Hell Trotter on the big screen during its limited run.
The theatrical setting can heighten the creature elements and unease for genre lovers. However, those who dislike repetitive jump scares or prefer tighter storytelling might feel frustrated and would do better waiting for streaming, where they can watch at their own pace once more opinions surface.
Final Verdict: Hell Trotter offers an intriguing blend of Vietnamese folklore and modern horror with strong moments from its cast, particularly Trần Ngọc Vàng’s chilling turn. Yet uneven pacing, repetitive scares, and a story that loses steam prevent it from becoming a standout. It’s a decent option for dedicated horror fans in theaters right now, but most viewers may prefer to wait for streaming.
