Moana 2026 Review: A Familiar Ocean Journey With New Heart

Published: July 11, 2026
Last Modified: July 11, 2026

Moana 2026 Movie

Our Rating: 7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Verdict: This live-action Moana gives families a pleasant theatrical trip with strong lead work and music that still lands well, but it follows the 2016 animated film so closely that it rarely feels exciting or new. Early audience reactions are mostly warm, though some viewers wanted more spark.

Pros:

  • Catherine Laga’aia brings real warmth, strength and a lovely singing voice to Moana.
  • The musical numbers retain their energy and charm, creating fun moments on the big screen.
  • Dwayne Johnson gives Maui solid physical presence and playful humour that fits the character nicely.

Cons:

  • The story sticks almost beat-for-beat to the original, so it feels predictable for many.
  • Some audiences feel the visuals and effects lack the vibrant, magical quality of the animated version.

Disney’s live-action Moana reached theatres on 10 July 2026. It turns the beloved animated tale into a real-life musical adventure set across Polynesian islands and open seas. Thomas Kail directs, while Catherine Laga’aia steps into the title role as the young islander who feels the ocean calling her.

Dwayne Johnson returns as the shape-shifting demigod Maui, with John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen rounding out the family cast. The film keeps its PG rating and aims straight at families who enjoyed the 2016 version.

Audience reactions since opening have been fairly positive, especially from families. Many people are highlighting the lead performance and the songs as the main reasons to watch. At the same time, online talks show that some viewers expected something fresher and feel the film plays it too safe.

The story stays simple and heartfelt. Moana leaves the safety of her island for the first time, teams up with Maui and sails into danger to help her people and restore balance to the world around them.

It is a journey about courage, listening to your inner voice and understanding your place in the bigger picture. The ocean itself feels like a living guide throughout. What audiences are praising most right now is Catherine Laga’aia. Viewers say she carries the film with natural charm, strong emotions and impressive vocals that make the musical parts shine.

Dwayne Johnson’s Maui is getting nods for looking convincing in live action and bringing easy humour to the adventure. The songs are another big talking point, with several people saying the music still works and sounds good with real voices behind it. On the other side, quite a few viewers point out that the film follows the animated story almost exactly.

This makes it feel familiar and sometimes predictable, especially if you already know the original well. Some also mention that the live-action effects and colours do not quite match the bright, imaginative feel of the cartoon version. A few families felt certain stretches dragged a little.

If you have kids who love Disney musicals or you simply want a colourful big-screen adventure with good messages about family and nature, this one should work fine in theatres. The biggest strength is the sincere lead performance that gives the story fresh emotional pull.

Its main weakness is that it does not take many risks or add much new. For many families it is worth a cinema trip right now for the music and spectacle. Others who prefer something more surprising can comfortably wait for streaming.
