Bhagavanth Kesari Surges on Prime Amid Remake Hype

The 2023 Telugu action-drama Bhagavanth Kesari has climbed to #2 in the Drama Movies category on Amazon Prime Video as of January 4, 2026. This surge comes amid buzz over its rumored Tamil remake, Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, set for theatrical release on January 9, 2026, during Pongal.

Fans are flocking to the original on Prime, calling it superior and urging others to “stick to the OG” to save money. Trailer comparisons have sparked debates, with many preferring Balakrishna’s performance over the remake’s “recycled” elements. Directed by Anil Ravipudi, the film stars Nandamuri Balakrishna as Nelakonda Bhagavanth Kesari, a tough ex-prisoner raising his late friend’s daughter, Viji (Sreeleela).

He empowers her to join the army while clashing with ruthless businessman Rahul Sanghvi (Arjun Rampal). Kajal Aggarwal plays a key role. Shot in Hyderabad on a ₹70 crore budget, it features S. Thaman’s soundtrack, including hits like “Ganesh Anthem.” The story blends action, emotion, and social commentary on women’s empowerment. Kesari’s mantra, “I don’t care,” defies norms, inspiring Viji’s growth.

Inspired by real issues, it challenges patriarchal views, showing girls raised with strength. Released October 19, 2023, during Dussehra, it competed with Vijay’s Leo but opened at ₹20 crore. It grossed ₹84.78 crore in India by day 3, ending with ₹94.2 crore net domestically and over ₹107 crore worldwide. Strong in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with 67% opening occupancy, it also did well overseas, especially in the US.

Critics gave mixed reviews: IMDb 5.8/10, praising Balakrishna’s energy but noting predictable plots. It won Best Telugu Feature at the 71st National Film Awards and Telangana’s Gaddar Award. Streaming on Prime since June 2024 in multiple languages, its current rise ties to Jana Nayagan’s trailer, released January 3, 2026.

Fans on X highlight better acting, no “hidden agendas,” and free access. In Malaysia, it hit top 10 on Prime early January. Holiday viewing and awards buzz add fuel. Balakrishna, 63 during filming, shines in action, proving star power. The film’s message endures, making it a must-watch before the remake. (Word count: 812)
