Our Review of Feminichi Fathima
Feminichi Fathima is a Malayalam family drama and social satire about a housewife whose small desire for a new mattress sparks a quiet rebellion against patriarchal norms. Shamla Hamza delivers a natural performance, making the character relatable, while the satire on male dominance is clever and humorous. Directed by Fasil Muhammed in his debut, the film uses coastal Kerala settings and music for an authentic vibe, earning praise for its thoughtful narrative.
What Worked
- Shamla Hamza’s natural acting as Fathima makes the rebellion feel personal and strong.
- The satirical bits on patriarchy hit the mark with clever humour that’s not too on the nose.
- Coastal Kerala shots and music give it that warm, authentic village vibe.
What Didn’t Work
- Some slower parts in the first half might test folks wanting quicker drama.
- Supporting roles like the neighbours could have more to do.
- Stays subtle, so no big twists if you’re after high suspense.
Facts and Behind the Scenes
Feminichi Fathima is Fasil Muhammed’s first film as director, where he also wrote and edited it, turning a simple idea into a satire after hearing real stories from coastal women. They shot mostly in Ponnani, Kerala, to capture that real small town feel, wrapping up after festival screenings last year. Not many know it premiered at IFFK 2024, winning big like NETPAC Best Malayalam Film, and Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films picked it up for distribution, giving it a boost without big stars.
Another fun bit is the team kept it indie with local talent, and Shamla Hamza prepped by chatting with housewives to get Fathima’s role right. Most folks aren’t aware the mattress idea came from a true anecdote Fasil heard, symbolizing women’s small fights for comfort. Shooting had light moments with improv laughs, building a family like crew that shows in the film’s warmth.
