Balan: The Boy is a Malayalam psychological drama thriller directed by Chidambaram (of Manjummel Boys fame) and written by Jithu Madhavan. The film stars young actor Adhisheshan K.R. in the lead role as Balan, with Farzana Palathingal in a standout performance as his mother. It also features Muhammad Zinaan, Girish A.D., Chandu Salimkumar, Jean Paul Lal and Tovino Thomas in key supporting roles.

The story revolves around a teenage boy’s turbulent search for his missing mother, unpacking themes of trauma, identity, survival, lies, protection and redemption in a mother-son relationship. The film opened on 19 June 2026 with a decent start, collecting around ₹2.11 crore gross on Day 1. It benefited from strong pre-release buzz around Chidambaram’s direction and the intriguing trailer. Kerala drove the bulk of the opening, while the dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada added some extra reach.

Overseas markets responded positively from the first week itself, which helped push the worldwide numbers nicely. The first weekend was particularly strong, with Day 3 (Sunday) emerging as the biggest day. After that, the film saw the usual sharp weekday drop but managed to hold better than many expected on subsequent weekends, thanks to genuine word-of-mouth. Audiences who connected with the emotional core and the well-crafted suspense have been recommending it, especially in family and multiplex circuits in Kerala.

Our Review

Balan: The Boy marks another ambitious venture from director Chidambaram, who previously delivered the massive hit Manjummel Boys. The film is a psychological thriller that blends emotional drama with suspense as it follows a young boy’s desperate search for his missing mother. With a strong screenplay by Jithu Madhavan, the narrative explores themes of family trauma, secrets, and resilience.

Newcomer Adhisheshan K.R. delivers a promising performance in the central role, while the supporting cast, including Farzana Palathingal and Chandu Salimkumar, adds depth to the story. The technical aspects, particularly the cinematography and background score (reportedly by Sushin Shyam), have been praised in early reactions for creating a gripping atmosphere.

The film balances emotional moments with thriller elements effectively, though some sections feel slightly stretched. Overall, it stands out as a well-crafted, content-rich thriller that should appeal to audiences looking for substance over pure commercial entertainment. From the box office perspective, Balan: The Boy has delivered a solid opening, which is impressive for a content-driven Malayalam film in a crowded release week.

The pre-release buzz generated by the director’s track record and the intriguing trailer has translated into decent advance bookings, particularly in Kerala. The film is performing well in multiplexes and is on track for a good first-day collection. If word-of-mouth remains strong — especially regarding the performances and the emotional core of the story — it has the potential to sustain well over the weekend and build steadily in the coming days.

The pan-India dubbed release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada could further boost its numbers in the long run. Compared to other recent Malayalam thrillers, Balan: The Boy has shown better traction among family and youth audiences. With its strong content and positive early reception, the film looks well-positioned to emerge as a commercial success and further strengthen Chidambaram’s reputation as one of the most reliable filmmakers in Mollywood.
