Our Review
Project Hail Mary is a brilliant, heartfelt, and intellectually satisfying sci-fi epic that successfully captures the spirit of Andy Weir’s novel while delivering a visually spectacular cinematic experience. Ryan Gosling gives a tour-de-force performance as Ryland Grace, blending humor, vulnerability, and quiet determination in a role that will likely be remembered as one of his best.
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller masterfully balance hard science, emotional stakes, and witty dialogue, creating a film that feels both grand in scale and deeply personal. The visual effects are breathtaking, and the story’s focus on problem-solving and human resilience makes it incredibly engaging from start to finish. Comparatively, the film sits comfortably alongside The Martian as a thinking viewer’s space adventure, while sharing the emotional weight of Interstellar and the wonder of Arrival.
It avoids many modern blockbuster pitfalls by prioritizing character and intelligence over constant action. Early audience and critic feedback has been excellent, highlighting its rewatchability and emotional payoff. As of 21 March 2026 (end of Day 2), Project Hail Mary has grossed $50.30 million in the US and $71 million worldwide against its $200 million budget.
The strong Saturday increase shows excellent word-of-mouth and sets the film up for a very successful theatrical run. Looking ahead, it is expected to become one of the biggest hits of 2026 both in theaters and eventually on streaming. This is smart, ambitious, and highly entertaining blockbuster filmmaking at its finest.
