Our Review
Vikalpa signifies a promising directorial debut for Pruthviraj Patil, who also leads the cast, delving into themes of perception, trauma, and reality’s fragility via a meticulously structured psychological framework. The story chronicles a protagonist’s spiral into doubt, where haunting visions erode the line between truth and delusion, supported by layered performances from Nagashree Hebbar and Harini Shreekanth that enrich the relational conflicts.
The “hold and release” screenplay method, paired with atmospheric visuals and Samvatsara’s evocative music, fosters sustained intrigue without conventional thrills. With its release on 30 January 2026, early critiques and audience sentiments are forming, emphasizing the film’s intellectual methodology and adept tension-building, though some observe a deliberate tempo that may challenge viewer endurance.
Relative to recent Kannada thrillers favoring concept over mass appeal—such as those merging mystery with emotional exploration—Vikalpa sets itself apart with philosophical nuances and subdued delivery, evocative of international psychological dramas tailored to a local setting. The ₹5 crore budget offers a manageable breakeven at around ₹10-12 crore gross, providing leeway against a moderate debut.
Initial occupancy patterns (around 15-20% on day 1) and collections point to a restrained opening, consistent with mid-budget Kannada thrillers that often gain traction gradually. The film’s trajectory will hinge on weekend attendance, regional sustainability (stronger in urban Karnataka), and critical support within a competitive release window.
Positive responses could drive respectable figures, akin to understated successes that accrue via organic appreciation in the Kannada market. If the intricate narrative restricts broader attraction, it may end as a standard performer. In summary, Vikalpa surfaces as a contemplative, ambitious addition to psychological cinema, showcasing emerging talent and creative narrative, with its commercial result to emerge based on continued theatrical response in the days ahead.
