Our Review
Prakambanam represents a bold entry into the horror comedy genre for debutant director Vijesh Panathur, who crafts a narrative set in a bustling college hostel, where everyday student antics collide with supernatural disruptions. The film follows three friends—played by Ganapathi S. Poduval, Sagar Surya, and AL Ameen—whose political ambitions and pranks are upended by a ghostly possession, leading to a series of chaotic and humorous events.
The ensemble cast shines, with Mallika Sukumaran delivering a standout performance as the elderly spirit, infusing the role with both menace and comic timing. Supporting actors like Rajesh Madhavan and Azees Nedumangad add depth to the interpersonal rivalries, while the screenplay balances light-hearted banter with eerie moments, though it occasionally leans on familiar tropes.
Released on 30 January 2026, initial reviews describe the film as an enjoyable, if uneven, ride that gains confidence in its second half, embracing absurdity for effective laughs. Critics note its smart casting and playful chaos, but point to predictable turns and a slow start that may test patience. Compared to recent Malayalam horror comedies like Romancham, which excelled through organic buzz and youthful energy, Prakambanam adopts a similar vibe-driven approach, prioritizing fun over profound scares.
Its modest budget establishes a low breakeven threshold, around ₹10-12 crore gross, offering resilience if positive reception builds. The film’s future will depend on weekend turnout, family viewership, and emerging word-of-mouth. Favourable feedback could propel it toward respectable totals, similar to content-oriented successes that overcome limited hype through critical appreciation.
If the blend of horror and comedy resonates broadly, it may achieve hit status; otherwise, it risks an average outcome. Overall, Prakambanam provides a competent, entertaining addition to the genre, contributing to Malayalam cinema’s thriving horror-comedy subgenre, with its commercial trajectory hinging on sustained engagement in the days ahead.
