Our Review of Kayilan
Kayilan is a Tamil thriller drama directed by Arul Ajit, starring Ramya Pandian, Prajin, Manobala, and Sshivada. The film is set against a realistic backdrop and revolves around intense personal and social struggles, with a strong female led narrative. It builds suspense with real life vibes and thoughtful themes, making it an intriguing watch in theatres.
What Worked
- Ramya Pandian and Shivada’s strong roles bring real power to the thriller elements.
- The suspense builds naturally, keeping things engaging without overdoing jumps.
- Simple storytelling with a debut director’s fresh take feels authentic.
What Didn’t Work
- From promos, some bits might feel predictable for hardcore thriller fans.
- Supporting cast like Manobala could use more screen time for laughs or depth.
- Lacks big action, staying more on drama side.
Facts and Behind the Scenes
Kayilan marks Arul Ajit’s entry as a director, who also penned the story, making it a personal project after years in the industry. The team shot mostly in real Tamil Nadu spots to keep that grounded vibe, wrapping up earlier this year but delaying from July to October for better slots. Not many know the trailer was launched quietly but got praise for its raw edge, with Ramya Pandian prepping hard for her intense scenes by working with acting coaches.
Another cool fact is the film draws from real mystery tales Ajit heard, blending them into a thriller without going too dark. Most folks aren’t aware Shivada joined late but nailed her role, and the crew kept reshoots minimal to stay true to the script. With a small budget focus on story over stars, it’s got that indie spirit Punjabi fans might relate to, but in Tamil style.
