Our Review
Wuthering Heights (2026) is precisely the kind of “beautifully toxic” cinema we’ve come to expect from Emerald Fennell. This is not a polite BBC costume drama; it is a sweaty, rain-soaked, and visceral exploration of obsessive love. Margot Robbie delivers a devastatingly layered performance as Catherine Earnshaw, shedding her Barbie shine for something far more jagged and desperate.
Jacob Elordi, despite the casting controversy regarding Heathcliff’s racial identity in the source text, brings a brooding, “rockstar” intensity to the role that anchors the film’s darker impulses. Their chemistry is undeniably “sizzling,” even as the script leans heavily into the more perverse and destructive elements of their bond. Technically, the film is a masterclass in gothic atmosphere.
Shot on 35mm VistaVision, every frame looks like a haunted oil painting, with the Yorkshire moors feeling more like a prison than a romantic backdrop. However, the film is already proving to be a “love it or hate it” experience. Literary purists may be horrified by Fennell’s decision to excise certain pivotal characters and rewrite the ending for maximum “primal” impact.
At 136 minutes, the film occasionally prioritizes style over narrative clarity, leading to a middle act that feels like a repetitive cycle of yearning and screaming. From a box office perspective, Wuthering Heights is a winner because it understands its brand. It marketed itself as a “dark Valentine” and has successfully captured that niche.
While it may face a steep drop-off once the initial hype of the lead pair fades, its strong opening and massive international presence ensure it will be one of the most discussed (and profitable) films of early 2026. It’s a “rip-snortingly carnal” time at the movies—just don’t expect a fairytale.
