Our Review of Caught Stealing
Caught Stealing is a fun crime thriller set in 90s New York, where Austin Butler plays Hank, a burnt out ex baseball guy who gets mixed up with gangsters after watching his neighbor’s cat. It’s got fast chases, brutal fights, and a wild plot with twists that keep you going.
Butler is great as the tough lead, and Zoe Kravitz adds spark as his girl. Darren Aronofsky directs it with style, like old pulp movies, but sometimes it’s too violent or the story feels a bit thin. If you like dark comedy and action, it’s a good time, but might not stick if you want deeper stuff.
What Worked
- Austin Butler’s strong lead role, showing real star power with his tough yet lost guy act.
- The fun, twisty plot with 90s vibes and dark comedy that keeps you hooked.
- Great cast like Regina King and Bad Bunny bringing energy to the wild scenes.
What Didn’t Work
- Too much violence and gore might turn off some folks looking for lighter stuff.
- Feels a bit like other old thrillers, not super original in parts.
- Some characters don’t get enough time, making the story feel rushed at times.
Facts and Behind the Scenes
Darren Aronofsky, known for dark films like Black Swan, went lighter here but still added his touch with real NYC locations like Flushing Meadows for that epic car chase scene. They shut down parts of Queens for days, using practical stunts instead of too much CGI to keep it raw and exciting. Austin Butler dropped about 35 pounds to look like a worn out ex player, training hard for the fight scenes, and not many know he improvised some lines based on 90s slang to fit the era.
Another cool thing is the author Charlie Huston wrote the script himself, changing bits from his book to fit the screen, like adding more humour. The cat in the story was a real scene stealer on set, with trainers bringing in multiple ones for safety, and Aronofsky said it was tougher directing the animal than the stars. Most people don’t realise the film won early praise at festivals for its soundtrack, blending 90s hip hop with modern scores, shot in just 40 days to capture that urgent feel.
