Reports confirm a robust opening at the Indian box office for a content-driven film, with India gross collections of ₹3.05 crore on Day 1 across 857 shows. Day 2 saw a strong jump to ₹5.35 crore with occupancy rising to 46% across expanded shows. Day 3 (1 March 2026) held steady at ₹4.20 crore amid positive word-of-mouth and weekend footfalls. Worldwide gross reached approximately ₹12.50 crore by the end of Day 3, including overseas contributions.
Theatre occupancy averaged 26.9% on Day 1 (night shows surging to 47.55%), improved to 46% on Day 2, and maintained healthy levels around 35-40% on Day 3 in Tamil Nadu. In comparison to other mid-budget Kollywood releases, the opening stands as one of the strongest of 2026 for a non-star-driven project, reflecting audience trust in the production banner and strong regional traction. Targeted promotions and growing buzz continue to sustain momentum, underscoring the viability of well-crafted family dramas in the current market.

Our Review
Thaai Kizhavi is the kind of Tamil film that doesn’t arrive with an explosion — it walks in quietly, sits down, and slowly fills the room. Set in the sun-baked village of Karumathur near Usilampatti in the Madurai hinterlands, the story follows Pavunuthaayi (Radikaa Sarathkumar), a 70-year-old iron-fisted moneylender who is the most feared person in her village. She extracts coins from children whose parents owe her interest. She yells at her grandson for watching TV because it adds to the electricity bill.
Ceiling fans left running unnecessarily are a personal offence to her. When she suddenly falls critically ill, her three estranged sons come rushing home — not out of love, but because rumours have spread of 160 sovereigns of gold she secretly purchased over the years on her trips to Madurai. What follows is a pitch-black rural comedy about greed, family dysfunction, and quietly — the dignity of women. Debut director Sivakumar Murugesan handles this material with remarkable confidence for a first film.
The first half is a laugh riot, packed with sharp village dialogues, brilliantly cast supporting characters, and an infectious energy. A homeless alcoholic who has running one-sided conversations with the local deity Karuppan is perhaps the most entertainingly written character Tamil cinema has produced in years — his rant telling Karuppan to “go back to Kerala” for failing to answer his prayers is both hilarious and unexpectedly political.
The second half slows deliberately and then delivers an emotionally resonant climax with powerful lines on women’s empowerment that reportedly drew spontaneous applause in theatres. Radikaa Sarathkumar is extraordinary. She doesn’t just play Pavunuthaayi — she inhabits her so completely that it is genuinely difficult to imagine any other actress in this role. She subverts both the “evil old matriarch” and the “saintly mother” archetypes that Tamil cinema has endlessly recycled, creating a character who is flawed, funny, frightening, and finally — deeply human.
Critics across outlets have used the word “award-worthy” without hesitation, and based on early audience reactions, that assessment seems entirely justified. Singam Puli as an obsessive Kamal Haasan devotee steals every scene he appears in and provides the film’s biggest and most consistent laughs. The technical team — Nivas K. Prasanna’s restrained yet emotionally intelligent background score, and Vivek Vijayakumar’s warm, earthy cinematography of the Karumathur countryside — keeps the film grounded and authentic without ever feeling cheap or underdone.
From a box office standpoint, Thaai Kizhavi is operating in the sweet spot that Tamil cinema’s content-driven mid-budget films occasionally discover — think Mandela (2021) or Driver Jamuna — films that opened quietly and then exploded through word-of-mouth into profitable runs. With a budget reportedly under ₹10 crore, the film needs relatively modest theatrical returns to break even and turn a profit, and the strong opening day indicators suggest it has every chance of doing so.
The Sivakarthikeyan Productions brand name lends it distribution muscle and promotional credibility. The Jio Hotstar OTT deal (already confirmed) provides a financial safety net. Early Day 1 estimates place India Gross in the ₹1.25–₹1.75 crore range — modest but entirely healthy for a non-star-vehicle content film releasing on 450+ screens. A strong Saturday–Sunday jump, fuelled by word-of-mouth, could make this one of the more pleasant commercial surprises of early 2026 in Kollywood.
