Spa Movie Collection | Budget | OTT | Hit/Flop

Spa is a Malayalam bold social-satire and drama, released on 13 February 2026, directed by the innovative Abrid Shine (Action Hero Biju, 1983). The film features an ensemble cast led by Shruthy Menon, Vineeth Thattil, Radhika Radhakrishnan, and Poojitha Menon. Centered on the inner workings of an urban massage parlor called “La Paradise,” the film dismantles societal hypocrisy through episodic encounters between spa therapists and their diverse clients.

Released alongside Pennum Porattum and Sukhamano Sukhamann, it targeted a mature audience with its “A” certificate. It opened with a modest occupancy of 8–10% across Kerala. On Day 1, Spa earned approximately ₹0.03 crore net in India. While the numbers are quiet, the film is primarily an urban-centric “experiment” that relies on the prestige of Abrid Shine’s brand.

Its gross collection in India stood at ₹0.04 crore. Worldwide, the collection reached ₹0.04 crore, with limited focus on the overseas market in its opening phase. As today is Saturday (Valentine’s Day), the film is seeing a small bump in multiplexes due to its “bold” tag, though it remains a niche viewing choice.

Our Review

Spa is a daring, albeit uneven, dissection of the “mask” that modern society wears. Director Abrid Shine returns to the episodic, observational style he perfected in Action Hero Biju, but this time the lens is turned toward desire, morality, and the double standards of the Malayali male.

The film is refreshingly devoid of “victimhood” cliches; the therapists, led by a commanding Shruthy Menon, are portrayed as professionals navigating a world of weird kinks and fragile egos. Vineeth Thattil as “Mathan” is the film’s breakout star, delivering a performance that is both hilarious and surprisingly tender. However, like many of Shine’s experimental works, Spa struggles with its structure.

The film purposely avoids a traditional “hero vs. villain” conflict, which might leave mainstream audiences feeling restless. While the first two acts are sharp and satirical, the final act—which introduces a sudden, Kill Bill-esque action subplot—feels disjointed and forced, as if the director wasn’t sure how to find a natural closure.

The technical values are high, with Swaroop Philip’s cinematography making the confined spaces of the spa feel both intimate and cinematic. Commercially, the film faces a tough climb. An opening of ₹3 lakh is very low for a director of Shine’s stature, though this is likely due to the film’s “A” rating and unconventional subject matter.

It isn’t a “family movie” by any stretch, which limits its box office potential during the weekend. Much like Poomaram, Spa is destined to be a “cult favorite” discussed on Reddit and film forums rather than a theatrical blockbuster. It’s a brave attempt at “truth-telling” that will likely find its true, appreciative audience on OTT.
