AT Welcome to the Dark Side Collection | Budget | OTT | Hit/Flop

AT: Welcome to the Dark Side is a Malayalam high-tech action-thriller, released on 13 February 2026, starring Shaju Sreedhar, Akaash Sen, Nayana Elza, and Saran Jith. Directed and edited by Donmax (the renowned editor turned director), the film is a dark, gritty exploration of the cyber-underworld. It follows Shivan and Akash, two strangers who unite to dismantle “Kali,” a mysterious figure running a digital empire of drugs and illegal media through the dark web.

Released with an “A” certificate due to its intense themes, the film occupied a niche slot in the Valentine’s weekend, catering to thriller enthusiasts. It opened with a very low occupancy of 4–6% across Kerala. On Day 1, AT: Welcome to the Dark Side earned approximately ₹0.03 crore net in the Indian market. The film faced extreme competition from other Malayalam releases like Pennum Porattum and Sukhamano Sukhamann, as well as the Bollywood giant O Romeo.

Worldwide, the opening day gross stood at ₹0.04 crore, with almost no international traction. While the technical aspects of the film have been noted by cinephiles, it has struggled to find a mainstream audience in a weekend dominated by romance and big-budget spectacle.

Our Review

AT: Welcome to the Dark Side is a film that excels in style but falters in soul. Director Donmax, leaning on his background as an editor, creates a visually frantic and claustrophobic world that perfectly mirrors the “Dark Web” theme. The use of neon lighting and sharp, rapid-fire cuts gives the movie a “cyberpunk” aesthetic that is rare in Malayalam cinema. Shaju Sreedhar delivers a stoic, reliable performance, while the younger cast members try their best to keep up with the film’s breakneck energy.

The core mystery—the hunt for a rogue hacker—initially provides a compelling hook for thriller fans. However, the film eventually buckles under the weight of its own technical ambitions. The plot becomes increasingly convoluted, relying on technobabble that might alienate a general audience.

At 2 hours and 23 minutes, the film is far too long for a “lean” thriller, and the “A” rated content feels more like a attempt to be “edgy” than a narrative necessity. When compared to modern Malayalam investigative thrillers like Anjaam Pathiraa or Antakshari, AT lacks the tight emotional core that makes a hunt for a villain truly terrifying.

It feels more like a high-budget music video for a dark-synth track than a cohesive cinematic experience. Commercially, the film is unfortunately a “non-starter.” With a negligible opening of just ₹3 lakh, it has failed to attract even the youth audience it was clearly designed for.

Its release timing was a strategic error, as the “Dark Side” isn’t exactly what couples were looking for on a Valentine’s Friday. It is a film that will likely find a small, appreciative audience on OTT platforms among fans of niche cyber-thrillers, but as a theatrical release, it has been completely overshadowed and will likely be out of most theaters by Monday.
