Maggi Pusthaka Collection | Budget | OTT | Hit/Flop

Maggi Pusthaka is a Kannada movie, released on 13 February 2026 starring Ranjan Kasaragod, Ranvee Shekhar, Raksha Gowda, Meghashree Kannadathi, and Mysore Ramanand. The film is directed by debutant Harivarasanam Kanakapura, who adapted his own novel Avani for the screen. A poignant social drama, it focuses on the struggles of a poor family during the pandemic-induced shift to online education.

The film started its box office journey on a very quiet note, as it is a niche, message-oriented project released alongside several commercial big-budget films like O Romeo. It saw limited screenings across Karnataka, primarily in urban centers like Bengaluru and Hubballi, with an average occupancy of around 5-8% on its opening day. On Day 1, Maggi Pusthaka earned approximately ₹0.02 crore net in the Indian market.

Given its focus on the “digital divide” and social commentary rather than “mass” entertainment, the film failed to draw large crowds on its opening Friday. Worldwide, the collection remained at ₹0.02 crore, as there were no major overseas releases reported for this small-scale production. With today being Saturday (Valentine’s Day), the film faces a tough battle against commercial romantic dramas, though it aims to find some footing through word-of-mouth among family audiences.

Our Review

Maggi Pusthaka is a sincere and heart-wrenching attempt to document a slice of recent history that many would rather forget—the pandemic era. Director Harivarasanam Kanakapura successfully translates the emotional core of his novel Avani to the screen, focusing on a bright young girl’s fight for a smartphone to attend online classes. The film shines in its depiction of the “access divide,” where education becomes a luxury for those at the bottom of the economic ladder.

Ranvee Shekhar, as Avani, delivers a grounded performance that anchors the film, while Raksha Gowda portrays the desperation of a widowed mother with commendable restraint. From a cinematic perspective, however, the film feels quite “old-school” and literary. The four-dimensional narrative structure intended by the director often results in a sluggish pace, with a runtime that feels excessive for its simple premise.

Technically, it lacks the polish of contemporary Kannada cinema, with cinematography that feels more suited for a television drama than a theatrical feature. When compared to other educational social dramas like Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale, Kasaragodu, Maggi Pusthaka lacks the humor and commercial “hooks” that help such films cross over to a wider audience. It is a film that demands patience and empathy from its viewers, qualities that are often in short supply during a busy weekend of blockbuster releases.

The box office outlook for the film remains bleak. With an opening of just ₹2 lakh and a stagnant Saturday trend, it is highly unlikely to recover its modest ₹1 crore budget through theatrical revenue alone. The film’s strength lies in its message regarding digital addiction and the value of motherhood, which may earn it a longer life on OTT platforms or through special screenings in educational institutions.

In the current theatrical climate, where “spectacle” is king, this small “pusthaka” (book) unfortunately fails to grab the spotlight it arguably deserves for its noble intentions.
