Our Review

Funky is an experiment in absurdity that unfortunately fails to find its rhythm. Director KV Anudeep tries to recreate the magic of his previous hits by relying on “no-logic” humor and quirky character traits, but the result feels more like a collection of disjointed social media skits rather than a cohesive film. The story revolves around Komal (Vishwak Sen), a struggling director whose project is hijacked by the producer’s daughter, Chitra (Kayadu Lohar).

While the meta-commentary on the film industry had potential, it is buried under layers of repetitive gags and a screenplay that lacks any emotional anchor. Vishwak Sen tries his best to carry the film with his energy, but his comedic timing often feels at odds with the film’s erratic editing. Technically, the film is one of the most frustrating watches of recent times.

The editing is jarring, with scenes ending abruptly and character arcs appearing and disappearing without warning. When compared to a film like Jathi Ratnalu, which had a certain “innocent chaos” to it, Funky feels forced and “aggressively awkward.” Kayadu Lohar serves mostly as visual relief, and while she performs her role with grace, the writing gives her little to do beyond being the foil to Vishwak’s antics.

The music by Bheems Ceciroleo provides a few catchy beats, but the background score often feels loud and overcompensates for the lack of genuine humor on screen. Predicting the box office future, Funky is in a precarious position. With a budget of ₹25 crore, it has only recovered about 9% of its costs on the opening day. The mixed reviews and the “cringe” factor mentioned by many viewers on social media (X/Twitter) suggest that the film will likely witness a steep drop after the weekend.

Unless there is a miraculous turnaround in the family audience segment, it is headed toward being a commercial disappointment. It’s a classic case of a director getting too comfortable with a specific style of humor that eventually loses its charm without a solid story to back it up.
