Our Review

*Star is a film that wears its heart on its sleeve but unfortunately lacks the technical finesse to deliver on its ambitious premise. The story, which attempts to be a “rags-to-riches” journey with a supernatural or somber start in a cemetery, feels disjointed. Director Vijaya Surya tries to blend raw emotion with commercial action, but the transition between these genres is often jarring.

Sharath Prakash shows potential as a performer, particularly in the more dramatic sequences, but the screenplay doesn’t give him enough depth to truly shine. Rajatha Raksha serves as a standard romantic interest, with her character arc feeling more like an afterthought than a central pillar of the story. Technically, the film suffers from its low budget.

The cinematography is inconsistent, and the editing by Shashidhar P. makes the 92-minute runtime feel much longer than it actually is. The background score by Vinu Manasu is perhaps the most competent element of the film, providing some much-needed atmosphere to the town-based sequences. However, when compared to the high-quality storytelling currently coming out of the Kannada industry (Sandalwood), *Star feels like a step backward into the dated “hero-centric” tropes of the early 2000s.

Commercially, the film’s biggest mistake was its release date. Launching a small, independent film on a weekend dominated by high-budget romances and major franchises is a recipe for box office invisibility. With an opening collection of just ₹1 lakh, the film has failed to cover even its basic distribution costs.

While it may find a small life as a “hidden gem” for viewers who enjoy simple, rural-town dramas on streaming, it is unlikely to leave any mark on the theatrical history of 2026.
